REPORT FROM THE ROAD:

Reported by Maria Martinez, Baton Rouge, LA

Wow, it got cold last night. Right at freezing. It was good that we kept walking most of the night. We had clear skies and lots of moonlight.

When we got to Mexico – was that just a day ago? Wow. We have really traveled a lot. I hear we’re at 1,200 miles into the walk and about 400 miles into Mexico already. Anyway, when we got to Mexico and camped that first night, we were wondering why aren’t we following the highway? And if we aren’t going to follow the roads, how are we going to keep from getting lost?

Well, when we woke up just at dawn, there was an old Indian man sitting in the middle of our camp. We later learned his name was Juan Matus. That first morning he did not speak. When most of us had packed up our camp, he simply stood up and began walking south and we all followed him. We walked until the sun was high in the sky and he stopped in a dry river bed and motioned for us to gather around him and sit. He spoke quite good English.

“You might be wondering how it is that I am here with you. I’ve been waiting for you. A long time. Here take some of this and chew it.”

We passed around what looked like a piece of some bark and broke off small pieces. After a while, the desert seemed to grow very still. The air did not move.

“The Earth has told me to help you. I will teach you how to cross the desert without being seen.”

He told us to look at a piece of the desert near us. To see it new. To see it inside us, not outside. I was looking at a small shiny rock near my foot. After a while, I could feel the heat of the sun shining off and into my eye. I could feel the cold and dark on the underside. I felt solid and organized and spacious and so comfortable. I could hear Juan continue to talk. I think he was now talking in his native language. But it could have been a sudden breeze that blew across. Everything began to move. Or drift. Dance. I was being carried along on his voice through a world that it seemed I had known forever. And that feeling hasn’t really left yet even now that I’m told we are just 160 miles outside Mexico City. Sometime in the next day we will be at Teotihuacán and the Quetzalcoatl Temple. We’re all wondering what will happen there.
