REPORT FROM THE WALK:

We’ve made it all the way across West Africa and we’re now just making the turn to head a bit further south toward Mount Kilimanjaro in Eastern Africa.

We’ve been walking in the rain for over a week now. It has cleared up a bit right now and they say Monday might not be much rain, but then the rain follows us for the rest of the week.

We’ve made it all the way across Nigeria and we are in the small coastal community of Uben Ikang, Cameroon. We’re actually just about right on the border and there are a lot of military people all over. It seems really tense to us, but everyone says it was much worse back in October, 2002 when a court in Europe ruled on the border dispute here. Mostly the dispute was about who owns the ocean and swamp directly south. Since colonial times these borders were never scientifically drawn up. Cameroon won the dispute (mostly) and it meant several oil companies, including Mobil Exxon, which has rigs in the disputed area, were now doing business with Cameroon instead of Nigeria.

If it clears up tomorrow we might get a peek at Mount Cameroon. We’re only about 20 miles away. We’re basically at sea level here, but Mt Cameroon rises from the ocean and goes up over 4,000 meters. Here’s a picture we found at the tiny store here:

Yesterday was the most exciting day for me! It was what made me sign up and do this walk. I think I’m the oldest person on the walk. I’ll be eighty-six on April first.

About six months ago I got this email from Nigerian Princess Tikka Masala Obasanjo. She sounded so distressed so I did all I could to help her. You see, her father had entrusted her with a huge amount of American cash, a result of some oil dealings on property owned by her father. Her father must have known his life was in danger, as less than a week later he disappeared. Tikka asked me to allow her to ship the money to me as she did not feel it would be safe in any of the Nigerian banks. So I agreed and a couple weeks later these two trunks of money showed up.

Princess Tikka told me to keep $250,000.00 as a gift for helping her out. So yesterday I got to go visit her and we had such a great time.

She said she is about to marry a very rich man and he is interested in sending me more cash. I am so glad I got to meet her. She seems to be doing so well now and I’m so glad.

When I told my friend and neighbor, who is a computer consultant, about this story she said I was probably the only person in the universe who actually got money from an email like that. She advised me to never respond to another email like that. I get lots of those kind of emails every day and the stories really get to me, but so far I haven’t responded to any others.

NOTE: Email scams are Nigeria’s third largest source of income!
