REPORT FROM THE WALK:

Anne Watson Reports:

We came around a corner and could see the ocean port city of Manta. We could see some of the port but we couldn’t see the EarthWalk Ocean Barge. As we got closer to the port and docks we thought we should be able to see it, but it didn’t appear to be there.

As we headed out on the dock we saw Captain Nemo Menomenum! He was so excited and happy to see us. “Great to see ya.” “We got a brand new ship for ya this year, I know you’re gonna love it.” “Come on now, step aboard. Watch your step.”

The captain wheeled around and stepped right off the dock.

We heard his foot contact a metal surface – and he didn’t fall into the ocean. Suspended over the water, he turned around to us with a big grin and said, “Yup, I think you’re going to like it”. He took another step and faded away. My god! The whole ship was completely invisible! One by one, we gingerly placed a food over the edge where the captain had stepped. We heard the sound of metal. Saw the look and heard the exclamations of amazement and saw our comrades disappear.

It wasn’t until I stepped off the dock myself that the full force of the experience hit me. My foot touched an invisible metal floor and quickly the whole ship – and all the sounds of the ship – came into my eyes and ears!

It was a huge vessel. Much larger than last year. Last year the ship was  a rusty red color. This time it was a kind of translucent blue. I’d never seen anything like it. The captain was introducing his crew on deck and after that explained how we would all have tasks to keep the ship, well, shipshape. “Before we show you to your quarters and get a meal prepared for you, lets get the trip underway.”

He explained to all the first timers how the ship worked. How by walking laps around the big track around the outer edge of the ship, the vibrations were converted into energy that fueled the engines. Sure enough as we started walking around the ship deck, we started moving away from the dock and on our way to the Galapagos Islands.

ABOUT THOSE FREE SOCKS:

David writes:

I am appalled!

I was wondering how Thorlo ( www.thorlo.com ) could (1) sell $15 per pair socks, and (2) could afford to give away $15 per pair socks.

I am appalled that I waited so long to try on my free pair, which I received last week via Earthwalk LLama Express.  These are incredible! They are Level 1 (ultra lightweight protection) - I cannot imagine how wonderful Level 3 (heavy protection) are.

So now I see. These are high-quality footgear, and yes, they should be selling for $15 per pair. And now I understand how they can give a pair away for free: I will be buying more. Hopefully the llamas will be able to catch up.
